Lone Star Leads researches the policies shaping everyday life in Texas and puts them in front of the people they affect.

We support policies that lower the cost of living, cut property taxes, secure the border, and keep violent offenders off the street.

What we are

An issue advocacy organization. We research state policy, take positions on it, and help Texans understand what is at stake before the decisions get made.

Our focus is the work of the Texas Legislature and what it means at the kitchen table: the cost of a grocery run, the number on a property tax bill, and whether a repeat offender is back on the street.

What we do

Policy is decided in a few months. The effects last for years.

Research

We track legislation, state budgets, and ballot measures from filing through implementation, then publish what we find in plain language instead of statute-speak.

Educate

We run digital, mail, and broadcast programs that explain what a policy actually does, and what it costs or saves a Texas household every month.

Engage

We give Texans direct ways to weigh in with their state leaders while decisions are still being made, not after the session gavels out.

Household costs

Affordability

  • We support policies that bring down the everyday cost of living for Texas families, starting with groceries, gas, utilities, and insurance.
  • We support keeping taxes low so hardworking families keep more of what they earn.
  • We support an economy that produces good-paying jobs across all of Texas, so families can thrive rather than just get by.
Taxation

Property tax relief

  • We support raising the homestead exemption so homeowners and seniors keep more of the value of a home they have already paid for.
  • We support the long-term goal of eliminating the school property tax on a primary residence, which makes up roughly half of a typical homeowner's bill.
  • We support relief that reaches renters as well as homeowners, since property tax costs get passed through in rent.
Border and enforcement

Border security

  • We support cooperation between federal, state, and local law enforcement to remove dangerous criminals who are in the country illegally.
  • We support sustained state investment in border security, including technology, physical barriers, and the officers who patrol the line.
  • We support expanding the use of high-tech cameras and detection technology to secure the border.
Courts and bail

Public safety and bail

  • We support giving judges the authority to deny bail to defendants charged with murder, sexual assault, or human trafficking.
  • We support moving bail decisions for dangerous repeat offenders out of the hands of unelected magistrates and into the hands of accountable, elected judges.
  • We support holding repeat violent offenders without bond so they cannot return to the street and reoffend.
